Five inspirational quotes from Winnie-the-Pooh

January 18 is Winnie-the-Pooh Day and to celebrate here are five inspirational quotes from the books.

The date coincides with the birthday of creator A.A. Milne, who based the character of Christopher Robin on his own son, Christopher Robin Milne.

A.A. Milne's two books on the adventures of the teddy bear and his friends are Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner which were published in 1926 and 1928 respectively.

Mental health issues are now being talked about more openly. Here are five movies that depict the subject.

1. What About Bob? (1991)

A successful psychotherapist loses his mind after one of his most dependent patients tracks him down during his family vacation.

 

2. Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Based on writer Susanna Kaysen's account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital in the 1960s.

 

3. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

A brilliant mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, but his life takes a turn for the nightmarish.

 

 

4. Melancholia (2011)

Two sisters find their strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.

 

5. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

Is this the most relaxing music ever?

Manchester trio, Marconi Union, worked with sound therapists to create the soothing tune called Weightless, which also slows breathing and reduces brain activity.

The song features guitar, piano and electronic samples of natural soundscapes.

Scientists played the 8-minute song to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.

The study - commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel firm Radox Spa - found the song was even more relaxing than a massage, walk or cup of tea.

Specialists have warned not to listen to it while driving.

Five health benefits of avocados

Avocado

Avocados are stone fruits and naturally nutrient dense, containing nearly 20 vitamins and minerals.

They are a great addition to any healthy eating diet so here are five benefits of eating them.

1. Lowering cholesterol

Avocados not only help lower bad cholesterol, they may also increase good cholesterol. A 1996 study in the Archives of Medical Research found that patients with high cholesterol who incorporated the fruit into their diet for a week had a 22 per cent decrease in bad cholesterol and an 11 per cent increase in good cholesterol.

2. Anti-inflammatory properties

Because of the antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids and fatty alcohols, avocados have great anti-inflammatory properties.

3. Reduce risk of heart disease

As avocados are high in mono and polyunsaturated fats, this may help reduce blood cholesterol levels and decrease the risk for heart disease. 

4. Boosts immune system

Glutathione, a powerful antioxidant which is associated with immune system health, is found in avocados.

5. Aids digestion

Avocados contain fibre which helps to keep digestion on track.
