Five inspirational quotes from Winnie-the-Pooh

January 18 is Winnie-the-Pooh Day and to celebrate here are five inspirational quotes from the books.

The date coincides with the birthday of creator A.A. Milne, who based the character of Christopher Robin on his own son, Christopher Robin Milne.

A.A. Milne's two books on the adventures of the teddy bear and his friends are Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner which were published in 1926 and 1928 respectively.

1. "You can't stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you. You have to go to them sometimes."

2. "People say nothing is impossible, but I do nothing every day."

3. "Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there someday."

4.  "Just because an animal is large, it doesn't mean he doesn't want kindness; however big Tigger seems to be, remember that he wants as much kindness as Roo."

5.  "I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time."

Five of the best films about mental health

Mental health issues are now being talked about more openly. Here are five movies that depict the subject.

1. What About Bob? (1991)

2. Girl, Interrupted (1999)

Based on writer Susanna Kaysen's account of her 18-month stay at a mental hospital in the 1960s.

3. A Beautiful Mind (2001)

A brilliant mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, but his life takes a turn for the nightmarish.

4. Melancholia (2011)

Two sisters find their strained relationship challenged as a mysterious new planet threatens to collide with Earth.

5. Silver Linings Playbook (2012)

After a stint in a mental institution, a former teacher moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when he meets a mysterious girl.

Is this the most relaxing music ever?

Manchester trio, Marconi Union, worked with sound therapists to create the soothing tune called Weightless, which also slows breathing and reduces brain activity.

The song features guitar, piano and electronic samples of natural soundscapes.

Scientists played the 8-minute song to 40 women and found it to be more effective at helping them relax than songs by Enya, Mozart and Coldplay.

The study - commissioned by bubble bath and shower gel firm Radox Spa - found the song was even more relaxing than a massage, walk or cup of tea.

Specialists have warned not to listen to it while driving.

Is this the most relaxing song ever? What do you think?

Adult Colouring Book published: 5 Ways to Colour Yourself Happier

ASMCoverFinal5

I don't like to have favourites. I love each one of my colouring books, but my new book, 5 Ways to Colour Yourself Happier, is very special to me.

Having lived with the rollercoaster ride of stress and  anxiety for many years, I've taken the techniques which helped me and turned them into colouring pages.

My highest hope for this book is that it will help, in some small way, to bring a light into the darkness for people dealing with this illness.

Book description:

A supportive colouring book to help ease worry and stress.
Drawing on her own experiences of living with stress and anxiety, the artist offers positive statements as colouring pages, based on techniques which she found helpful.
There are five sections, with five colouring pages in each.
• Positive affirmations
• Practicing gratitude
• Getting active
• Looking after yourself
• Mandalas for relaxation
There is also a bonus ‘My Path to Happiness’ action sheet to colour, which you create from action points found at the start of each section.
By making small changes over time, you can turn the negative in positive and become happier.

Creating an adult colouring book

Gillian Adams shell mandala

Painting in watercolours or acrylics has been a relaxing hobby for me. I also love drawing in pen and ink so was delighted to see that these were gaining popularity through adult colouring books.

Being creative, whether it's making earrings or doodling, can be totally absorbing so I can understand why these books have a calming effect on people.

As well as writing fiction, I've also started the first drawing for my own colouring book which will be ocean themed.

As I grew up and still live in the south-west of England, I've found the coastline very inspiring so some of the images will include myths from the area such as mermaids and pirates - though not necessarily on the same page!

All the images will be hand drawn, then scanned into my computer and the first one, pictured above, will be a shell mandala.

The book will be published through Createspace and available on Amazon by late Spring 2016.

In the meantime, happy colouring!
